28 Years Later 2025 Movie Review

28 Years Later unfolds in three distinct segments, each so unique they could stand as separate films. The tonal shifts are stark, with the past barely shaping the present. While this fragmented storytelling may not be flawless, the film’s visual and auditory brilliance overshadows any narrative flaws.

Cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle, an Oscar winner for Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire, immerses you in a hauntingly vivid apocalyptic world. Death is rendered with eerie beauty, yet so is the vibrant pulse of life—even among the zombies, or “the infected,” as Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland term them. Above all, nature reigns supreme, flourishing pristine in this eerily silent world.

The film’s use of Rudyard Kipling’s 1903 poem Boots is a masterstroke. A 1915 spoken-word recording by actor Taylor Holmes, once used for psychological impact in US military training, resonates chillingly here, its rhythm evoking the relentless march of war and zombified soldiers. Once you hear it in 28 Years Later, its purpose becomes unforgettable.

A thematic sequel to Boyle and Garland’s 2002 classic 28 Days Later (with 28 Weeks Later as a bridge), this chapter unfolds 28 years after a rage virus devastated London and beyond. Now, the infected are contained on the British mainland, while the uninfected have carved out a fragile sanctuary on a nearby island. A causeway links the two, impregnable at high tide but a perilous passage at low tide, where islanders cross to scavenge for food, fuel, and to hunt.
